How did you get started, and what has led up to where you are today as an artist?
My hometown is Chicago, IL. I come from a big family with over a hundred cousins. My parents always made sure I was active in extracurriculars to occupy my time. I was in piano, saxophone lessons, swim classes, on the softball team, and more. I knew from the beginning that music was a great passion of mine. I would sit in my room and write songs for hours, which helped mold me into the singer-songwriter I am today. The first song I released on all platforms was called “If You Call Me”. In “If You Call Me”, I tell a story about my ex blowing up my phone when he knows he messed up.
Who do you feel has influenced your sound the most?
Growing up I listened to Indie Arie, Ty Dolla Sign, Michael Jackson, and Lecrae. Just to name a few. They really inspired me to go hard and step outside my comfort zone with their art. Versatility is crucial but also knowing your space well. Currently, my sound influence comes from what I go through in life. I draw inspiration from my own situations and my friends experiences as well. The pain plays a huge role in how I convey my musical emotions.
What do you feel sets you apart from other artists and gives you your own sound?
My melodies, storytelling, and catchy hooks allows for me to standout within the music industry. The sound I convey paints a picture of someone who goes through hard times but always finds a way out.
What has been your biggest challenge and what do you feel you have learned from it?
The biggest challenge within my life is following my music dreams without my Grandma being here to experience this as well. She passed away from colon cancer when I was growing up. We had a bond that no one could break. She always would sing at church, and with me literally anywhere. My Grandma truly gave me the music spark and I am forever grateful. I learned to always cherish every moment with your loved ones no matter what. Her legacy continues to live through me everyday.
Tell us about your latest project, what have you got going on at the moment?
My latest project “No Phase” dropped in April! No Phase is about knowing your worth enough to walk away from a situation. You can’t let someone walk in and out of your life while you remain loyal to them. I wrote it for one of my friends who was in this exact situation for a few years.
What advice would you give to anyone new coming into the industry?
Always stick to your roots no matter what anyone else says. Being unapologetically yourself will put you on top in the long run!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank for getting you to where you are now, anyone you’d like to give a shout-out to?
I’d like to thank my parents, uncle, grandma, and my management team for pushing me to be the best at my craft. I could’ve given up but I know they expect the highest from me. I won’t let them down.
